La Catrina, better known as The Lady of the Dead, was popularized in the 1910s through the works of famed Mexican lithographer and cartoonist, José Guadalupe Posada. But lesser known is that the iconic figure actually dates all the way back to the Aztec era, in the incarnation of the death goddess Mictēcacihuātl, whose role was to watch over the bones of the dead, which the Aztecs believed were a source of life in the underworld. Seven hundred years later, this ancient goddess stands as a timeless icon of the Day of the Dead festival.
